What Is Hikawa Maru, Exactly?

Hikawa Maru is a passenger-cargo liner built in 1930, originally commissioned by NYK Line (日本郵船) to sail the Seattle route between Japan and the US Pacific Northwest. She made 238 crossings in her career — carrying passengers, mail, and cargo across the Pacific during one of the most turbulent periods in modern history.

During World War II, she was converted into a hospital ship. She's one of the very few Japanese vessels from that era to survive the war intact. After the war, she returned to passenger service before being permanently moored at Yokohama's Yamashita Park in 1961.

In 2016, she was designated a 重要文化財 — an Important Cultural Property of Japan. That's not a label given lightly. It puts her in the same category as ancient temples and historic castles. Honestly? She deserves it.

The ship is open as a museum, and you can walk through most of the interior. Here's what I'd focus on:

  • First-class cabins and social hall — Original furniture, original layout. The scale of passenger travel in the 1930s is genuinely surprising.
  • Engine room — Accessible and visible from a viewing area. The original triple-expansion steam engines are still there.
  • Captain's bridge — Great views of the harbor. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Yokohama Bay Bridge.
  • Hospital ship exhibition — A quiet, moving section covering the WWII period. Worth taking your time here.

One of the things I love about this visit is that Hikawa Maru sits right in the middle of one of Yokohama's most walkable, flat, genuinely lovely stretches. Yamashita Park (山下公園) runs along the waterfront — roses, grass, harbor views, benches. It's a classic Yokohama postcard and it costs nothing to walk through.

From the park, it's an easy flat walk to 中華街 (Yokohama Chinatown) — the largest Chinatown in Japan, about 10 minutes on foot. Fantastic for lunch before or after the ship. Try the 豚まん (steamed pork buns) from the street stalls. And about 15 minutes along the waterfront, the 赤レンガ倉庫 (Red Brick Warehouse) is great for coffee and browsing — fully flat, no stairs.
